Five years ago, I wrote an article about holiday spending that ironically, feels even more relevant today.
Every year around Thanksgiving, the same cycle kicks in:
- Black Friday.
- Cyber Monday.
- Christmas shopping.
- Last-minute “I deserve this” purchases.
And every year, millions of people wake up in January stressed, overextended, and wondering, “How did I spend that much?” Back then, I realized something simple but painful:
I wasn’t overspending because I didn’t know better… I was overspending because I wasn’t planning better.
I’d swipe my card during the holidays in the name of generosity, celebration, or “getting a good deal”… But the truth? Most of those purchases weren’t planned. They were impulsive. Emotional. Triggered by marketing, tradition, or pressure. So I started doing something different.
I created a 6-step process to make any big purchase without debt or regret. It helped me survive holiday spending without the January hangover and it’s the same system I still use today. And as we head into Thanksgiving week, I want to share it with you.
Moral of the story is:
The holidays don’t wreck your finances, your lack of a plan does.
Spending is inevitable. Deals are everywhere. Emotions run high. But discipline is built through structure, not willpower. When you have a timeline, a budget, and accountability, your decisions get smarter, calmer, and more intentional.
Take holiday spending, for example:
Most people don’t overspend because the gifts are expensive… They overspend because they didn’t create a savings timeline. They didn’t build a mini-budget. They didn’t communicate their spending expectations with their partner. They didn’t cut back or prepare ahead.
This is the SAME pattern that shows up with investing, debt, saving, and long-term financial goals. And that’s exactly why I created my coaching programs and the Confident Investor Blueprint. So you can stop relying on impulse and start relying on a system.
Because the truth is:
If you can learn to manage holiday spending, you can learn to manage your entire financial life. If you want this holiday season to feel intentional and not stressful… Then let’s build your spending plan and your investing plan now.
